Summary

VA Pittsburgh is looking to recruit a Part Time Medical Director - for the Telemedicine Medical Officer of the Day (Tele-MOD) program - to provide responsive - high-quality - standardized care using telemedicine when clinically indicated. The primary goal of the Tele-MOD service is to manage Veterans in place and consistent with their care plan goals.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred Experience: Extensive experience managing older adults (preferably Veterans) in the post-acute and long-term care settings (e.g. - nursing homes/Community Living Centers - Home Based Primary Care)
  • Prior experience with using telehealth to manage older adults who experience an acute change of condition
  • Prior experience with basic troubleshooting related to telehealth services and/or programs
  • Prior Medical Director
  • Proven post-acute long-term care experience
  • Experience working in a large academic medical center or complex healthcare environment including inpatient and outpatient settings

  • Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to perform the above listed duties which require general overall good health - ability to sit at a desk working at a computer - engage in light to moderate physical activity during community outreach including walking - carrying supplies and to safely lift up to 50 lbs
  • Requires travel throughout the medical center and the community
  • Requires performing activities involving sitting - walking - standing - bending and carrying such items as books - papers and files.

Duties

  • The Pittsburgh Technology Enhancing Cognition and Health - Geriatric Research - Education and Clinical Center (TECH-GRECC) is a congressionally mandated geriatric Center of Excellence that was established in 2000 and has the University of Pittsburgh as its primary academic affiliate
  • The TECH-GRECC serves VISN 4 and is housed at the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS)
  • The position reports to the Director of the TECH-GRECC
  • The Tele-MOD program is an interfacility on-demand clinical service that allows for a distributed group of providers to manage the care of older Veterans residing in post-acute and long-term care settings after-hours using telemedicine
  • The Medical Director of the Tele-MOD program is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational - financial - programmatic - and personnel activities for VAPHS Tele-MOD program
  • Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: Providing clinical care for Veterans located in post-acute and long-term care settings with shifts that cover the following hours: Monday - Friday 4 PM - 8 AM - and 24 hrs
  • on Saturday - Sunday and Holidays
  • Establishing - meeting - and continuously monitoring the goals and objectives of the Tele-MOD Program while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives of the TECH-GRECC and VAPHS more broadly
  • Directing the day-to-day operations of the entire Tele-MOD team including - human resource management - training - onboarding as well as continued growth and development of Tele-MOD program
  • Providing recommendations on the strategic vision of the Tele-MOD program to the TECH-GRECC and VAPHS executive leadership and is responsible for implementing approved initiatives
  • Working closely with a variety of stakeholders - coordinating the activities of Tele-MOD program across the VAPHS enterprise
  • Sensitive to politics at all levels is required to develop Tele-MOD services between many VAPHS institutions with complex interrelationships - working cooperatively for the mutual benefit of all
  • Functioning as a leader within the TECH-GRECC - participating in strategic planning and helping to ensure the efficient operation of the Tele-MOD program
