Job Description:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks an exceptional leader and scholar to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Health Behavior. The successful candidate will have a record of distinction in research and scholarship, including a history of successful extramural funding. In addition, the chair will have a demonstrable commitment to teaching and experience or potential for success in academic administration.

Reporting directly to the Dean, the Chair of Health Behavior provides academic and administrative leadership to the department and serves as an integral and influential member of the School of Public Health's academic leadership team. The Chair is responsible for all research, education, and practice activities; oversees the department's administrative operations; and works with the Dean to encourage philanthropic engagement and support.

An earned doctoral degree in health behavior or a related discipline is required. The chair must have a record of scholarship, teaching, and service to warrant appointment as a tenured or tenure-earning professor at UAB .

Evidence of collaborative relationships across disciplines as well as with community organizations, funding agencies, and other stakeholders.

The inclination and ability to listen to and learn, the capacity to interact and communicate with a broad range of constituents, and the ability to generate consensus. Adaptability, flexibility, and high emotional intelligence.

▪ Commitment to community
An authentic commitment to community engagement and partnership.

▪ Advocacy for the department
The ability to represent the Department of Health Behavior and its research, academic programs, and other activities, and to articulate its mission effectively within the school, across the university, and to external audiences.

▪ Operational and administrative experience
Demonstrable ability or potential to build, manage, and lead a team, preferably in a complex academic or research environment. Demonstrated financial, budgetary, and personnel management acumen.

Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in community based participatory research is also desired but not required.
