Job Description

The Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time teaching-focused position at either the assistant or associate level to support our growing undergraduate majors. This 9-month non-tenure track position begins August 1, 2025, and is renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellent teaching and the department's staffing needs. There may be the potential for hiring multiple positions at the assistant level. The standard teaching load is 4 undergraduate course sections per semester, although course releases for service and administrative responsibilities (e.g., coordinator of our research methods or introductory courses) may be available. The University of Tennessee has a well-established promotion system for non-tenure track faculty which leads to 3-year and then 5-year appointments and our department offers mentoring to support your success in the promotion process. As faculty members, teaching faculty are invited to participate in the shared governance of the department. Knoxville continues to be an affordable place to live and boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene as well as easy access to water sports and other outdoor activities including the Smoky Mountains National Park.

The psychology department offers two undergraduate degrees: the BA in psychology, which, with over 1200 majors, is one of the largest at the University, and a BS in neuroscience, the fastest growing major at the University, with more than 600 majors.  The Department also offers PhDs in our APA-accredited Clinical and Counseling psychology programs, as well as MA and PhD degrees in Experimental Psychology (Neuroscience and Behavior, Cognitive and Developmental Sciences, and Social). We currently have 36 tenure-line faculty and 7 full-time non-tenure track faculty, as well as several part-time lecturers. We value excellence in undergraduate education, and many of our instructors win teaching awards at department, college, university, and national levels. We value diversity and enjoy a collegial and friendly atmosphere among our faculty and staff. Information about our Department and undergraduate programs is online at .

Applications are sought from candidates with a PhD in any area of psychology, or a related field, who have demonstrated promise for outstanding undergraduate teaching skills. Applicants who anticipate having their PhD by December 2025 may be considered. Applicants with at least five years of full-time teaching experience and a consistent record of excellence in undergraduate teaching may be considered for the Associate Teaching Professor designation upon hiring. We are most interested in faculty who can teach on campus in Knoxville, and so interest and/or demonstrated excellence in online teaching is not required. However, we are developing an online degree program, so faculty who could contribute to our online offerings are welcome to apply. We may be able to consider faculty who could only teach online. While we have many teaching needs, those who can teach courses in Cognition, Learning, Motivation, Research Methods, or General Psychology are particularly encouraged to apply, as are faculty who could contribute to our new mental-health focused concentration.

Applicants should electronically submit their cover letter, vita, teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and names and contact information for three professional references. Review of applications will begin January 7, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. Please contact the search chair, Dr. Tim Hulsey ( [email protected] ), with questions about the position.

All qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment and admission without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, and parental status, or any other characteristic protected by federal or state law. In accordance with the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the University of Tennessee affirmatively states that it does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, or disability in its education programs and activities, and this policy extends to employment by the university. Requests for accommodations of a disability should be directed to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Accessibility, 1840 Melrose Avenue Knoxville, Tennessee 37996-3560 or  [email protected] or (865)974-2498.
