Summary:

As a Heavy Duty Fleet Diesel Mechanic at Ewing Bros Inc., you will be a key contributor to maintaining a fleet of 90+ light-, medium-, and heavy-duty tow trucks, along with third-party commercial vehicles and equipment. This position involves diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic and electrical systems, emissions systems, and complex drivetrain components in a DOT-regulated environment.

You will be working on a wide range of vehicles—from modern, electronically controlled tow trucks to older diesel rigs and heavy-duty support equipment. This is a hands-on, skilled trade position that supports both internal fleet uptime and revenue-generating third-party repair work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform preventative maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and comprehensive repairs on company and customer vehicles (A/B/C services).
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, CAT, Detroit), including electronic control modules, after treatment systems (DPF, DEF), and emissions systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, PTOs, winches, wheel lifts, and other towing equipment.
• Perform brake service and inspections (air and hydraulic systems) to meet or exceed DOT standards.
• Conduct electronic diagnostics using manufacturer-specific scan tools and software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, OEM portals).
• Perform welding, cutting, and light fabrication when needed to support vehicle structure and equipment.
• Handle roadside service calls for emergency breakdowns.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs in fleet management software, documenting repairs, time, and parts used.
• Ensure all repairs meet DOT, OSHA, and Ewing Bros. safety standards.
• Coordinate daily workload with Fleet Manager, prioritizing safety and operational readiness.
• Keep the shop clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant. Supply and maintain your own set of industry-standard tools.

Preferred Additional Experience:

• Experience servicing heavy-duty towing equipment (rotators, integrated wreckers, flatbeds, under lifts).
• Knowledge of trailer systems, ABS diagnostics, suspension rebuilds, and alignment principles.
• Air conditioning service (EPA 609 certification preferred).
• Familiarity with hydraulics and electrical systems unique to tow and recovery vehicles.
• Welding certification or proficiency in MIG/Stick.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent; trade/vocational training or diesel tech certification strongly preferred.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in diesel mechanics or heavy-duty fleet maintenance.
• Proficiency with diesel diagnostics, hydraulics, electrical troubleshooting, and emissions systems.
• Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA compliance standards and inspection requirements.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL Class B (or willingness to obtain) is a plus.
• Must provide own tools; specialty tools and diagnostics provided by the company.

Working Conditions:

• Regularly exposed to hot, cold, wet, or noisy environments typical of a fleet garage or roadside repair scene.
• Frequently required to stand, kneel, bend, or work in awkward positions.
• Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.
• Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, or on-call duty for breakdown service.
